Primary memory of computer refers to all computer memory types that the CPU may access directly over the data bus. Primary storage and internal memory are other names for primary memory, which is frequently referred to as main memory.

1. What Is Memory?
Memory is a place where the computer stores its data or information that is gets from the user. Like - Memory is same as like the containers of our home's kitchens in these containers we stores daal, rice or something else, so as in computers these containers are known as Memory, and that thing which we store in memory is known as data or information.
The Memory can be thought of as a 'cell', and this cell is further divided into bits. A bit means a binary digit (ex- 0 and 1).After adding up 8 bits it forms a byte. If you want to know more about the bit you can go on the website More On Bits
Unit | Short Name |
---|---|
8 bits | 1 Bytes |
1024 bytes | 1 KB |
1024 KB | 1 MB |
1024 MB | 1 GB |
1024 GB | 1 TB |
1024 TB | 1 PB |
1024 PB | 1 EB |
And This Table goes on till 1 Yota Byte, but know+/ you have to know only till 1 EB. Here, KB stands for Kilo Bytes, MB stands for Mega Bite, GB stands for Giga Byte, TB stands for Tera Byte, PB stands for Peta Byte, EB stands for Exa Byte
2. Primary Memory
Primary Memory of computer is also called as main memory of the computer. the nature of primary
memory is that they are volatile(volatile memory means that primary memory requires electric charge to store
the data and as soon as the power supply is cut, this memory is not able to hold the data).
CPU (control programmable unit) can access it directly. The Primary Memory is small in size as comparision
to Secondary Memory
. Because Primary memory of computer is cannot able to store data as soon as the electric supply
goes, so primary memory has a temporary storage The Examples Of Primary Memory are RAM, ROM etc. which we
will read further.
3. Secondary Memory
As Primary Memory Of computer is known as Main Memory so secondary memory is known as BackUp memory. And
Secondary Memory is Non-Volatile means it is able to store data even if there is no electric supply so
secondary memory has a permanent storage. Secondary Memory is big in size as comparision to Primary memory
of computer. CPU can't access secondary memory directly means at first this secondary memory will go to
Primary Memory of computer and then primary memory of computer will send it to CPU.
The exmaples of secondary memory are -: Pen Drive, CD (Compact Disc), DVD(Digital Versatile Disc), Hard
Disks etc. if you want to know more about secondary memory then you can click on the link Secondary Memory Because in this article we are going to know about the primary
memory!.
4. Parts Of Primary Memory
The Primary Memory of computer is divided into two parts. These Are -:
- RAM (Random Access Memory)
- ROM (Read Only Memory)
5. RAM in Primary Memory of computer
RAM stands for the Random Access Memory. RAM is a volatile memory. So when the powers goes off the contents of the RAM got erased.
In the RAM memory the memory cells can be accessed for information and data transfer from any desired random location. That is the, process of locating a word in memory is the same and requires an equal amount of memory, thus it names like "random access".
As Stated above in the diagram The RAM has two parts. These Are -: 1.> SRAM, 2.> DRAM. Lets study about both of these in a very detailed way.
5i. About SRAM
SRAM stands for Static Random Access Memory. They Are Made of flip-flop(flip-flop is a binary cell which is capable of storing 1bit of data in it).And SRAM is faster 10 Nanoseconds as comparision to the DRAM. Mens SRAM is faster. So SRAMs are used to perform special tasks or applications.
5ii. About DRAM
DRAM stands for Dynamic Random Access Memory. As SRAM is made up of flip-flop As same DRAM is made up of Transistors and Capacitors. DRAM is slower than the SRAM. Today's DRAM chips have access times ranging from below 20 to 70 Nanoseconds.
6. ROM in Primary Memory of Computer.
ROM stands for The Read Only Memory in this memory you could only read the data, it means that this primary memory unit could only perform read only operations; it does not have a write capability. And The ROM is a non-volatile memory Means it can store the data even when the electric supply goes. Thats Why, ROM contains BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and it help the computer to on or off it. if you want to know more about the BIOS you can click on the link BIOS.
ROM is of five types but in this article we will study till its fourth types. So The three types of ROM are -: 1.> PROM, 2.> EROM, 3.> EEROM, 4.> Flash EEPROM
6i. All About PROM
PROM stands for Programmable Read Only Memory. it is also called as OTP(One time Programmable). PROM is a user-programmable memory in which is burnt using special equipment called a ROM burner.
6ii. All About EROM
EROM stands for Erasable Read Only Memory. in EROM one can stor the data in memory chip and can erase it many times as needed so this memory is named "Erasbale".
6iii. All About EEROM
EEROM stands for Electronic Erasable Read Only Memory. in EEROM one can stor the data in memory chip and can erase it many times as needed so this memory is named "Erasbale".
6iv. All About Flash EEROM
Flash EEROM stands for Flash Electronic Erasable Read Only Memory. A unique kind of EEPROM is flash memory. Flash memory chips, which are structurally identical to EEPROM, use standard PC voltages for erasure and reprogramming. Additionally, a whole block of bytes needs to be cleared first. A single standard MOS transistor is used in flash memory to erase an entire block of FGTs.
